Thank you to all volunteers and partnering organizations for a great year of Students for Healthy Youth!

Wednesday Session at Green Oaks 2007

Our mission:

The waxing obesity epidemic in the United States is extremely detrimental to underserved populations, where access to resources and health education are limited by economic status. Such disadvantages are especially unfortunate in children, who must carry the cumulative detriments of obesity throughout their lifetimes. Student for Healthy Youth is a community service organization intended to address the issue of childhood obesity in the local community. Specifically, we plan to bring about change in habits through student-taught units on fitness and nutrition geared towards students at local elementary schools. The units themselves will focus on topics like choosing meals, understanding nutrition, understanding risk factors for obesity, and exercising regularly. Beginning with a partnership at Cesar Chavez elementary school, we eventually hope to expand our program to other schools as well. In addition to instructional units, we will explore alternative avenues to promote awareness such as inviting speakers or organizing fitness events.

Since the spring of the 2006-2007 year, we have partnered with the Boys and Girls Club in Redwood City and the Dexterity Sports program at Green Oaks Academy in East Palo Alto.
